Pregnancy Test Calculator
Find out the earliest and most reliable dates to take a pregnancy test. Get personalized recommendations based on your cycle, ovulation date, or conception date.
How It Works
After conception, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus and begins producing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is what pregnancy tests detect. The amount of hCG in your body increases rapidly in early pregnancy, roughly doubling every 48-72 hours.
This calculator estimates three key dates based on your input:
- Earliest test date: About 10 days after ovulation, when early detection tests (sensitivity of 6.5 mIU/mL) may detect hCG. Accuracy is limited at this stage.
- Recommended test date: The day of your expected missed period (about 14 days after ovulation). Standard tests are approximately 90% accurate.
- Most reliable date: One week after your missed period (about 21 days after ovulation). Both early and standard tests are 99%+ accurate.
If you select the "Last Period Date" method, the calculator estimates your ovulation date by subtracting 14 days from your cycle length (the luteal phase). For example, with a 28-day cycle, ovulation is estimated on day 14.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early can a pregnancy test detect pregnancy?
Early detection pregnancy tests (like First Response Early Result) can detect hCG as early as 6 days before your missed period, which is about 10 days after ovulation. However, accuracy this early is around 60-75%. For the most reliable result, wait until the day of your expected period or later.
What is the difference between early detection and standard pregnancy tests?
Early detection tests have a sensitivity of about 6.5 mIU/mL, meaning they can detect very low levels of hCG. Standard tests have a sensitivity of 25 mIU/mL and are designed to be used on the day of your missed period. Digital tests typically have a sensitivity of 25-50 mIU/mL.
Can I get a false negative on a pregnancy test?
Yes, false negatives are common when testing too early. hCG levels double roughly every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy. If you test before enough hCG has accumulated, the test may show negative even if you are pregnant. If your period is late and you got a negative result, retest in 2-3 days.
Is a morning test more accurate than an evening test?
Yes, especially in very early pregnancy. First morning urine is the most concentrated, containing the highest levels of hCG. If you are testing before your missed period, use first morning urine for the best accuracy. After your missed period, hCG levels are usually high enough to detect at any time of day.
When should I take a blood test instead of a home test?
A quantitative blood test (serum hCG) can detect pregnancy as early as 7-10 days after ovulation and measures exact hCG levels. Your doctor may recommend a blood test if you have irregular cycles, are undergoing fertility treatment, or have had repeated negative home tests with missed periods.
